Abstract:
Foamed polymeric products consist of a large number of relatively small gas-filled cells. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most commonly used materials for the preparation of foam products. The cellular structure of the PVC foam determines its properties, performances and applications. In this study, the effect of processing condition (temperature of blowing (in the stabile range of 188-192 °C) and blowing time (in the range of 90-150 s)) on thermal properties of PVC foam were investigated. Thermal properties of the foam composites were measured using thermogravimetric analysis, in the temperature range from room temperature to 700 °C, at a heating rate of 10 °C/min, under nitrogen atmosphere. Increasing temperature and time of the blowing, thermal degradation starts at lower temperatures and the temperature of composites secondary decomposition is decreased, causing more energy to break the hydrocarbon backbone of the polymer matrix. On the other hand, the primary degradation temperature of the composites, which indicates the start of the chlorine separation process from the polymer chains, decreases slightly by increasing temperature and time of the blowing. For all samples, residual weight at 700 °C is less than 38 wt. %.
